Regina Cleri Seminary

Writer: Victor A. GalvezVictor A. Galvez

Regina Cleri Seminary, or "RCS," was the vision of Bishop Daniel J. Gercke, who dreamed of a place in Tucson dedicated to guiding young men on a path of faith, intellect, and community. In the late summer of 1956, the new seminary opened its doors to its first freshman class. Each year, RCS welcomed students who would bring new life to its halls, filling them with laughter, friendships, and dedication.

The students of Regina Cleri shared experiences unique to seminary life. Rising early, they attended morning prayers, their voices echoing in unison with praises and hymns. Days were filled with study and contemplation, blending rigorous academics with teachings meant to instill a deep and lasting commitment to faith. Outside the classroom, young seminarians formed lifelong bonds. In the school's expansive courtyard and under the desert trees, friendships blossomed, and memories took shape.

There were stories of late-night discussions in dormitories, where future priests and community leaders debated philosophy, challenged each other’s ideas, and spoke of their hopes for the future. As they trained in Christian doctrine, they also tested the waters of brotherhood and maturity. Teachers and mentors watched with pride as each student grew, taking their place in a long line of men dedicated to serving the Church and their communities.

In the spring of 1975, Regina Cleri saw its final graduating class. The closing of RCS marked the end of an era, but the legacy of the school lives on in the stories of its alumni. Each one carried forward not only the knowledge they acquired but the spirit of friendship, commitment, and faith that Regina Cleri had instilled in them. Decades later, alumni still remember their time at RCS with fondness—a place where they walked together, discovering purpose and building memories that would last a lifetime.

Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 2pm, Raceway Grill Restaurant in Maricopa, Arizona, and afterwards at the home of Chris and Jane Mead, some of us seminarians will gather again.
